Physical Education (PE)

At Alexander Hosea we are passionate about being active and engaging positively with sport.

PE develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a broad range of physical activities. These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming, outdoor & adventurous activities and athletics.

From Reception to Year 6 the children will have the opportunity to develop a bank of skills which progress from one school year to the next. As a school we use the Val Sabin PE Scheme to ensure we are developing our progression of skills. Through our teaching of PE we are fully inclusive and differentiate our PE lessons to ensure that it is achievable for all children including those with SEND.  We provide opportunities for the children to take part in inter and intra competitions, festivals and tournaments.

PE promotes an understanding in children of how their bodies work in action and how to have a heathy lifestyle, which in turn will help them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives to support their mental health and personal wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression).  Children who are more physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers.

As a school, we aim through our PE sessions, to develop the children’s sportsmanship skills, which will help them to be co-operative, resilient, develop a self-belief and build leadership skills. We encourage children to have a growth mind-set with PE and know that everyone can improve their skills, speed and agility over time. Ensuring that children have access to sufficient daily activity can improve behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.

Sport Premium

All young people should have the opportunities to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of physical activity and sport at a young age can lead to a lifetime habit of participation.

We use the Sport Premium to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, physical activity and sport offered across the school. We use the sport premium to:

  • Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that the school provides.
  • Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now are sustainable and will benefit the pupils joining the school in future years.

We use the PE and sport premium to secure improvements in the following indicators:

  1. Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity.
  2. Raise the profile of PE and sport across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
  3. Increase confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  4. Provide broader experiences of a range of sports and physical activities offered to all pupils.
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport.

Funding is allocated on the number of pupils in Years 3 to 6. £16,000 plus an additional payment of £10 per pupil. So for financial year 2022-23 the school is expecting to receive £17,840 (with 5/12 income in April 2022 and 7/12 income in Oct 2022).
