Alexander Hosea Primary School

Roots to grow, wings to fly

French

Intent

It is our intent at Alexander Hosea Primary to provide all children with a high quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multicultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. A high quality language education fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in the target language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and writing. It provides them opportunities to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and enhance understanding of their first language. Language teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils with the skills to visit, study and work in other countries. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak in French with others and know how important other languages can be in their future.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

· understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

· speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

· can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

· discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

Implementation

Here at Alexander Hosea French is taught in a whole class setting using the Language Angels scheme of work. The lessons are designed to motivate children from the first moment and have clear, achievable objectives. Lessons provide a variety of sources to model the language and incorporates games, stories and songs to maximise enjoyment as well as making connections to real life situations. Lessons initially focus on speaking and listening and progress to developing reading and writing skills in order to lay the foundations for foreign language learning in KS3. Each lesson, children build on the skills they have already learnt and develop new ones through a range of fun, exciting and engaging activities. Children are encouraged to:

· listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding

· explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes

· speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures

· develop accurate pronunciation and intonation

· engage in simple conversation

· broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words they meet through the use of a bilingual dictionary

· appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language

· write phrases from memory and adapt these to create new sentences

Impact

The impact of our teaching is measured through:

· observing children speaking and listening in French

· marking of written work

· pupil conferencing

· book looks

· learning walks and regular monitoring of teaching

· annual reporting of standards to parents

It is our aim is that our children leave Alexander Hosea with a strong foundation of French that enables them to continue developing their knowledge and skills into Key Stage 3. Through high quality provision and teaching of French we aspire to create children who have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other languages, countries and cultures, welcoming that, in a multilingual society it is a valuable skill to communicate effectively with others in another language.
