At Alexander Hosea Primary School we believe in ‘quality first teaching’ which is appropriately differentiated to ensure that all children, irrespective of need and ability can access the curriculum at their level and make at least good progress. This will involve the class teacher and teaching assistants working with varying groups of children to provide targeted teaching to support their next steps in learning.

We are committed to ensuring the personalisation of the curriculum and learning to ensure each child’s progress and attainment is maximised. On-going assessment is used to inform the next steps in each pupil’s learning. Sometimes it is considered necessary to support these next steps through more targeted teaching, or interventions. 

Intervention Groups

Interventions are used appropriately and flexibly to support teaching and learning with individuals and groups of children across the ability ranges.

These are for children identified by the class teacher as needing some extra support, additional to the quality first teaching and provision provided in class.

These may:

• Take place in the classroom or another teaching space
• Be led by a teacher, teaching assistant or outside professional.

For your child the provision provided may include:

• Group sessions with specific targets to help him/her make more progress
• Pre-teaching of a specific concept or learning objective to ensure that they can access the learning in class
• Support for communication or language needs, physical development needs and social and emotional needs

The new SEND Code of Practice came into effect in September 2014. There is a government guide provided for parents and carers. Edward Timpson from the Department for Education has written a letter to parents and carers explaining the new reforms.

Education Health Care Plans

Children who currently have a Statement of SEND will, over the course of the next three years, be moved to a new Education Health Care Plan (EHCP); these are for children who require a higher level of support, often with a learning support assistant, sometimes one to one, sometimes in small groups.

In order to be issued an EHCP children usually need to have had several months of additional support already and they also need to have been assessed by specialists for specific learning difficulties; their needs will be more complex and longer term.

Disabled access to the school

We have a marked disabled parking bay just inside the entrance to the car park.

Access to the school building is possible through doors which are wheelchair user friendly.

The school building is all on ground level so there are no stairs.

We have two disabled toilets.
